Description: Calorad® is a liquid dietary supplement with a pleasant lemonade flavor that is composed primarily of 340 milligrams per half-ounce serving of Type II hydrolyzed collagen (hydrolysate) from either beef (Bovine Calorad) or tuna (Marine Calorad). Each 1/2 ounce serving additionally contains 8 mg of aloe vera and supplies 3 grams of protein, 0 grams of fat and 0 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Calorad is fat-free, transfat-free and carbohydrate-free and provides only 10 calories per serving.
Calorad® comes in a Kosher formulation (the marine formulation is Kosher). The manufacturer (Nutridiem Laboratories) states that regular use of Calorad supports healthy weight loss without the loss of lean muscle mass (which is unhealthy and can occur in many diets). While weight loss and body fat reduction can be achieved simply by following the labeled instruction to avoid eating within three hours prior to sleep using the PM or "evening" formulation, or first thing in the morning (30-45 minutes prior to eating breakfast) using the AM or "morning" formulation. The manufacturer also makes a sublingual spray formulation which contains additional amino acids (Glycine, Lysine, Arginine, and Glutamine) which help the Calorad to be absorbed through the tissues of the mouth.
Serving Size and Bottle description:Each bottle of Calorad AM or PM liquid weighs 1 pound and 5 ounces and contains one half liter (500 mL) of Calorad. Taking 1/2 ounce per day should allow almost 34 servings per bottle, so one bottle should last approximately 34 days. Calorad Spray is packaged in a spray bottle containing 120 mL (4.06 ounces) of Calorad. Spray. Calorad spray has a more flexible dosing schedule, but is more expensive than Liquid Calorad®. A serving size is 2 sprays before each meal and before bedtime, or alternatively 8 sprays at bed-time (on an empty stomach, and 3 to 4 hours after the last meal).
Scientific Studies: Although the manufacturer does not make claims for Calorad in the treatment or cure of disease, the manufacturer does cite published clinical trials in OsteoArthritis and Osteoporosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Fibromyalgia all conducted with Type II hydrolyzed collagen (collagen hydrolysate), the primary ingredient in Calorad.
A clinical study of Calorad was conducted by Joel B. Lao, MD. Lao is a Doctor of Internal Medicine, and works as a medical consultant in the Philippines. Dr. Lao studied the effects of Calorad and its effect on body weight and body mass index in overweight and obese individuals. The subjects in this study were 50 overweight or obese individuals who were observed by Dr. Lao and his associates over a 90-day period. One bottle of Calorad was provided to each of the subjects every month for a 3-month period (3 bottles total during the study). In month 1, the average weight loss was 5.7 pounds. By month 3, subjects had an average reduction of 10 pounds, and an average inch loss at the waist of 3 inches.
Study demonstrating that Calorad helps to increase or maintain lean muscle mass: Rena Davis and co-workers conducted a study in which 300 subjects between the ages of 17-77 years, were followed for 1 year and most of whom lost weight (an average of 3.75 pounds per month) but maintained lean muscle mass. Davis stated: "We also found that in the entire group, less than 0.6, or less than 1 per cent, had any loss of lean muscle mass. And 36 per cent of the group actually gained lean muscle mass during that time."
According to this study, 40% of subjects were successful on losing weight or inches within 1 month, 75% after 2 months and 87% after 3 months.
